Homer's Iliad, Plutarch's Lives, Dante's Divine Comedy and George Elliot's Mill on the Floss. what do they all have in common? they're all great works of literature (greek, roman, italian and english, respectively)...and they're all currently lying on my closet floor holding down the corners a a pile of rock posters i'm putting up on monday. i have now sunk to a new intellectual low. *hangs head in shame*
i hope i can manage to save a bit of face this summer by actually reading one of those before september. _________________ mmm...cruelty |

i'm trying to promote education...get off the computer, read a book!
...or not.
but i think i'll actually attempt to read the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix again. i feel like such a dumbass for having barely read anything ALL SUMMER LONG. i blame this website...and a few others. but at least from mocking the lack of grammar skills on some other sites, mine have improved!
so, cool books:
Kushiel's Dart (incredible lyrical prose...one of the best books i've ever read)
Silver Wolf (ditto)
Sabriel (a fantasy world populated by demons, monsters and necromancers...good gothy fun) _________________ mmm...cruelty |

Well as long as we're on the subject, how's that Pompeii book by Richard Harris coming along? _________________ Be all that you can be in the Gummy Army! |

although, from what i've seen of finnish, i think that will probably be the hardest language i ever tackle. it's not even indo-european, just proto-indo-european - it bears no resemblance to any of the other languages i've ever studied. |
Oh, I love finnish! Its beautiful!
I understand a couple of words and ofcourse I understand a litte bit cursing! But thats the language I will lern soon, I am planning on taking courses!
When im "almost in love" with a finnish guy, I think that would be useful _________________ Does true love even exist?

^Haha, isn't it funny that we always learn the curse words first of any new language?

And the book is really great too! You could finish it in an afternoon. A very easy read. _________________ Be all that you can be in the Gummy Army! |

I gotta warn you, it's much harder than german, or swedish,or latein, or french or anything. One of the hardest on earth. But if you really wanna learn it, you will. But I gotta say that there's one girl in my friend's class who has lived in Finland over 4 years now, and we still don't understand anything of what she's saying. So, learning this language really takes time |

^I think some people are just more inclined towards new languages than others. It also depends on your language background I think. Hell, there are some people who have lived in Canada for more than four years and still can't string together a proper english sentence.
But if you know one of the romance languages then it makes the other romance languages easier because they all came from Latin. Or I guess having a Latin background would make the romance languages easier too I suppose. I haven't tried my hand at those languages yet so I don't know how well my Latin will serve me. We'll find out this year when I take French at school. _________________ Be all that you can be in the Gummy Army! |

^yeah that's what I like about latin. It's very straightforward. There are certain rules so as long as you keep to the rules you'll be able to translate no problem. Of course there are the exceptions to the rules but you learn those over time. Latin just makes sense to me. _________________ Be all that you can be in the Gummy Army! |

My stupid High School would not allow me to have Latin...if you can believe that I was SO annoyed at them.
But I am planning to take it at College. Latin is the best language to be sang by choirs...and I so want to learn it. Besides, I am studying Portuguese and English Literature, I should know at least the basics of Latin.
I am also reading Dante's Divine Comedy. I got a great version that has the original text and the Portuguese translation, side by side. I am also reading "On the Nature of Things" by Lucretius; Plato's "Republic" and Aristoteles' "Poetics".
Apart from this I am reading "Wolves of the Calla" by Stephen King and a book about the life and work of Salvador Dali. _________________ "Beauty is truth, truth beauty," - that is all
